Brief
Description

The
Portuguese Atlantic Committee is a non-profit association, created in
accordance to the provisions of the Portuguese Law, with the main following
goals:
- To make the Atlantic Treaty Organisation better known;
- To give information about the Portuguese contribution towards the fulfilment
of the Alliances objectives, in the defence of peace, liberty, pluralist
democracy and human rights;
- To contribute to the furthering of friendship and comprehension relations
between allied countries and to raising its respective peoples living
standards and social well-being.
The Portuguese Atlantic Committee is a full member of the Atlantic
Treaty Association (ATA), an organisation that promotes the same type
of goals and to which 40 countries are currently affiliated.
The Portuguese Atlantic Committee has regularly had a very active role
within the ATA and some members of its Board of Directors have held high
level offices in the ATA. Dr. Bernardino Gomes was ATA Vice Chairman between
1985 and 1988 and Chairman between 1988 and 1991. He is currently a member
of its Patrons Committee. Dr. António Borges de Carvalho was Treasurer
of the ATA for six years and from May 2000 to November 2003 held the important
office of Secretary General, being placed in the respective head-office
in Paris. Dr. António Jorge Gonçalves Rodrigues chaired
the Education Committee between 1992 and 1998 and finally Vice Admiral
Reis Rodrigues became ATA Vice-chairmen in November 2003.
Some of the Portuguese Atlantic Committees regular activities include
organising conferences and seminars and managing a Library and Documentation
Centre that is available to people interested in issues related to Defence
and International Relations, in particular those directly concerned with
NATO. Until the end of 2001, the Committee also ensured the edition and
distribution of the Portuguese version of the NATO Review;
from 2002 onwards this collaboration regards only edition since the magazine
is only available in an on-line
version.
Dr. Bernardino Gomes is the current President of the Portuguese Atlantic
Committee and Ambassador Robert Hunter, from the United States, and former
NATO embassador, is ATAs Chairman.
The head-office of the Portuguese Atlantic Committee is at Av. Infante
